Subject: Public Domain Legal Citations Date: Fri, 14 Mar 1997 08:50:28 -0600 From: Marshall Leighton Wilde To: citation@teo.uscourts.gov Dear Sir or Ma'am: I would like to write in support of the development and implementation of a public domain system of legal citations. The Feist case puts into doubt the copyrightability of a citation system by abolishing the sweat of the brow doctrine. This suggests that it is only a matter of time before copyright protection is eliminated for products with as little originality as a system of citations. Rather than wait for this to happen, we should move forward with a new system in the public domain. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Marshall Leighton Wilde 2305 W. 27th Avenue Eugene, OR 97405 mlwilde@law.uoregon.edu Second Year Law University of Oregon School of Law
